What this journey covers

This overland yatra drives you from Kathmandu to Muktinath Temple in a private 4WD jeep. The one-way distance is about 400 kilometres, broken into safe daily stages. Beyond Beni the road turns rugged, so an experienced mountain driver and a proper four-wheel-drive vehicle are essential.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Kathmandu to Pokhara Drive roughly 200 kilometres along the Prithvi Highway beside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Lunch near Mugling. Reach Pokhara by mid-afternoon. Overnight in Pokhara.
  • Day 2: Pokhara to Tatopani Drive about 100 kilometres past Naudanda and Kusma to Beni, the gateway to Mustang. Continue into the Kali Gandaki valley and relax in the hot springs at Tatopani. Overnight in Tatopani.
  • Day 3: Tatopani to Jomsom via Marpha Drive 70 to 80 kilometres on mountain tracks through Ghasa and Kalopani, with Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri towering above. Stop in Marpha for apples and whitewashed alleys, then reach Jomsom bazaar. Overnight in Jomsom.
  • Day 4: Jomsom to Muktinath and back Drive past Kagbeni and climb the high-altitude trail to Ranipauwa. Walk or take a short horse ride to Muktinath Temple. Bathe in the 108 holy spouts and visit the eternal flame. Return to Jomsom for the night.
  • Day 5: Jomsom to Pokhara Drive back down the Kali Gandaki valley through Beni to Pokhara. The journey is roughly 170 kilometres and takes seven to eight hours. Overnight in Pokhara.
  • Day 6: Pokhara to Kathmandu Morning departure along the Prithvi Highway. Your driver drops you at your Kathmandu hotel by late afternoon.
